Munroethuruthu: A Tropical Paradise

A serene archipelago, Munroethuruthu, graces the confluence of the Ashtamudi Lake and Kallada River in Kollam district, Kerala, South India. Composed of eight idyllic islands, this 13.4 square kilometer haven offers a tranquil escape.

Accessible by road, rail, or boat, Munroethuruthu lies approximately 25 kilometers from Kollam, 38 kilometers north of Paravur, 12 kilometers west of Kundara, and 25 kilometers from Karunagapally.

Named after Resident Colonel John Munro of the former Travancore kingdom, this island village beckons tourists with its diverse attractions. Visitors can witness traditional coir production, from retting to weaving, observe local fishermen casting their nets, and marvel at the spectacle of prawns being fed. For nature enthusiasts, the islands offer opportunities to spot migratory birds, explore narrow canals and waterways, and admire the lush mangrove forests and coconut plantations.

Munroe Island hosts the exhilarating Kallada Boat Race, a renowned event that takes place between Karuvathrakadavu and Muthiraparambunettayam.
